Here are some pieces I created in Malcolm Cochran's Construction Sculpture class at OSU this spring. It was really nice to create again. It's been a long time since I've posted anything on this so I thought new work would be appropriate. My foot is broken and I'm in a hard cast for another month! But I plan on creating again as soon as it is healed. The bottom wood sculpture was just installed at the Ohio State Fair's fine art exhibition thanks to my dear friend and beloved artist Stephanie Rond.

Sometimes Making Something Leads to Nothing

The Ingleby Gallery’s current exhibition, Sometimes Making Something Leads to Nothing, centers a selection of contemporary art around what the gallery asserts to be the theme of transformation. Francis Alys‘ Paradox of Praxis I (Sometimes Making Something Leads to Nothing) headlines the exhibition. The video documents Alys pushing a large block of ice through the streets of Mexico City until it melts and ultimately disappears. While superficially inane, the action poignantly demonstrates the often meaningless nature of humanity’s travails. In the end, Alys’ act can be seen to celebrate the nothingness it reveals.

rest in peace to the great merce cunningham who died sunday night at the age of 90. this artist has worked closely with some of the other greats like john cage, robert rauschenberg, and marcel duchamp. his influence was enormous. and collaborations exceeded the limits of what dance, movement, sound, and art had experienced together before.

Boxi's latest work, done in Athens, is entitled "To die for". It is part of the 2nd Athens biennial "HEAVEN".

"It's an attempt to portray the blind purity of love, and a wall of belief that can end it all. The work is a reflection upon the sad fate of two young lovers who were killed because of their love."

The work consists of 11 hand cut life-sized greyscale layers of the stencil. To see how the piece was done watch the video below:

Kate made 'Brood' for her Royal College of Art degree show and it has since become her most well-known work. Initially it may seem like an innocently patterned spiral of some 23,000 chicken wishbones bearing all the happy optimism this material evokes, but look again and you will see that the symbolism of hope has been subsumed by the sheer quantity of materials used. En masse the bones recall a cull, a killing field, the horrors of genocide and slaughter of innocents.

Curated by Eva Ball, this exhibition and outdoor listening party explores the band Joy Division and the Nazi forced sex slave camps of the same name.

Joy Division, the band, is an English post-punk outfit, who changed their name from Warsaw to Joy Division in 1977, borrowing their new moniker from the sex slave wing of a Nazi concentration camp described in the 1955 novel, The House of Dolls. The group played their first show as Joy Division on January 25th, 1978.

The House of Dolls describes Joy Divisions as groups of Jewish women in WWII concentration camps who were forced into slavery for the sexual pleasure of Nazi soldiers. The book is currently part of Israeli high school curriculum.

Evidence suggests that between 1942 and 1945, Auschwitz and at least nine other Nazi concentration camps contained sex slave camps, called ‘Freudenabteilung’ or ‘Joy Divisions’, used by the government to reward both Nazi soldiers and cooperative non-Jewish inmates. This kind of slavery is not an uncommon war crime.

While bassist Peter Hook and keyboardist/guitarist Bernard Sumner of the band Joy Division later admitted to being intrigued by fascism at the time, Morris (drums) insisted that the band’s interest with Nazi imagery came from a desire to keep memories of the sacrifices of their parents and grandparents during World War II alive. He argued that accusations of neo-Nazi sympathies merely provoked the band “to keep on doing it, because that’s the kind of people we are.”

Housed on the grounds of the Columbus Metropolitan Library, Joy Divisions exists in three simultaneous layers. The first being the listening party: a dj presentation of “all” of the released Joy Division music and a few rarities, totalling 5.5 hours of music. Passers-by are invited to stop by, sit on the grass and listen.

The next layer is the visual component of the exhibition. Mark Van Fleet’s Van Gallery is situated between the listening party and the Library’s iconic fountain topped with a bronze sculpture of the forever young, Pan. The Van Gallery houses the works of 11 artists commissioned by Eva Ball to create works that explore the two Joy Divisions.

The final layer is a co-authored catalog that not only discusses the artwork in the exhibition but also delves deeper into the topic as a whole. Writings include a brief history of sex slavery in the 21st century, Nazi imagery in post-punk fashion, the problem of authorship, among others. The writing will be available for perusal during the exhibition, for sale, and because several copies will be part of the Library’s permanent collection, available for free at the library any time.

The exhibition includes a full dinner offered at 6:30. All are welcome and, of course, the event is free.

Following the exhibit there will an afterparty at Skylab Gallery, 57 E. Gay Street, just blocks from the Colmbus Metropolitan Library. Slated to start at 9pm, this event will showcase a variety of music inspired by Joy Divisions. This event is not only a celebration, but also a fundraiser to offset some of the costs associated with the exhibit, including food (hundreds of people have been invited including homeless shelters) and artists’ fees.

Dj Detox: A genius who just dreams of spinning at a rave that Bobby Brown, Throbbing Gristle, Miss Tony and Martin Weinland attend, meanwhile planning the perfect goth/pop/hiphop dance party.

yesterday was the official beginning of my countdown to 30. my inevitable and steady deterioration. thankfully i've agreed to finally join thom glick and his crew to create and record a piece a day of art. i'm glad i agreed because i needed to make the dedication and make more. they all started in january but because i'm slow and lazy, i found an excuse to start when it would be a year for me. so i'll post that blog soon. just have to settle on a name. for now here's the landscape photo i took last night.

The New Normal explores the increasing exposure of the private sphere to public view, whether voluntary or involuntary. Each of these works was completed after October 2001, when former Vice President Dick Cheney described new government surveillance measures following September 11 as “the new normalcy.” At the same time telephones were tapped and airline passengers were exhaustively searched, the public began willingly to document and share online intimate aspects of daily life, for convenience and community.

Personal information has become a readily available raw material. In response to this shift, many of the artists featured in The New Normal have used other people’s private information and images—home videos, financial data, leaked documents—as the basis of their work. By doing so, they offer disconcerting glimpses into the lives of neighbors, strangers, and celebrities, while making visible the social and aesthetic conventions that lie behind these disclosures. Other artists in the exhibition adopt self-disclosure as a strategy, one that seemingly conflicts with the need for privacy. They reveal their own bodies, their consumer habits, and their domestic spaces. For some of them, this reflects the social desire to build intimacy; for others, it is framed as a gesture of defiance in response to the intrusiveness of surveillance.

Comprehensively, the works in The New Normal suggest that access to private information is a currency whose circulation is growing and evolving. We may find this exchange both frightening and fascinating, but we are inescapably complicit in its perpetuation.

Of Other Spaces explores how space affects human behavior and experience. The exhibition asks us to consider the ways in which spaces are charged with authority, and both serve and suppress our actions and ways of relating. The concept of “other spaces” is drawn from the philosophy of Michel Foucault, especially his thoughts on social relations and cultural practices expressed in the intersection of space, architecture, and history. In a rarely cited 1967 text by Foucault, entitled [“Of Other Spaces, Heterotopias,”]>>> he introduces what he calls heterotopias--different or other spaces.

Hospitals, prisons, schools, libraries, museums, fairgrounds, cinemas, beaches, cemeteries, gardens, hotel suites, train stations, and even mirrors have the potential to be other spaces. Other spaces are essentially virtual. They function in accordance with personal memories, associations, experiences, and imaginings that one has of these very real sites. By making common practices strange, Foucault’s writing often initiates conversations about habitual actions, in this case, in relation to space. The collection of works of art on exhibit here and the reprinting of Foucault’s text on “heterotopias” in the exhibition catalogue form the visual and philosophical catalyst for thinking about the function and meaning of space in everyday life.

Of Other Spaces continues a discussion on the origins, uses, histories, influences, and current and past activities that accompany our personal experiences of space.

An integral part of this exhibition includes a one-time screening on [March 11 ]>>> of She Might Belong to You (2007) by Eva Meyer and Eran Schaerf, Metropolis, Report from China (2006) by Maya Schweizer and Clemens von Wedemeyer, and Will there be a sea battle tomorrow? here are some comments:

"Many of those specialists are, directly or indirectly, on the industry payroll, which is controlled by another set of personnel: the dealers, brokers, advisers, financiers, lawyers and — crucial in the era of art fairs — event planners who represent the industry's marketing and sales division. They are the people who scan school rosters, pick off fresh talent, direct careers and, by some inscrutable calculus, determine what will sell for what.

Not that these departments are in any way separated; ethical firewalls are not this industry's style. Despite the professionalization of the past decade, the art world still likes to think of itself as one big Love Boat. Night after night critics and collectors scarf down meals paid for by dealers promoting artists, or museums promoting shows, with everyone together at the table, schmoozing, stroking, prodding, weighing the vibes.

And where is art in all of this? Proliferating but languishing. "Quality," primarily defined as formal skill, is back in vogue, part and parcel of a conservative, some would say retrogressive, painting and drawing revival. And it has given us a flood of well-schooled pictures, ingenious sculptures, fastidious photographs and carefully staged spectacles, each based on the same basic elements: a single idea, embedded in the work and expounded in an artist's statement, and a look or style geared to be as catchy as the hook in a rock song."

apparently an artist didn't write this article. Someone who does a great job at generalizing an industry that in theory strives for uniqueness and independence. Interesting that this should come about right after viewing the Wexner Center for the Arts Andy Warhol, Other Voices, Other Rooms exhibit. Where art's value was questioned and Andy's obsession with hollywood seeped into his making art a commodity. Perhaps it took an unwanted spin but dear HOLLAND COTTER, We are not all interested in that. I may not be a well to do artist by any means, far from it but I do know that some of the most brilliant artist minds do not behave the way you described and even some of the "well off" artists.

We possibly have Andy Warhol to thank, well, pop artists. for:

The first real contemporary boom was in the early 1960s, when art decisively stopped being a coterie interest and briefly became an adjunct to the entertainment industry. Cash was abundant. Pop was hot. And the White House was culture conscious enough to create the National Endowment for the Arts so Americans wouldn't keeping looking, in the words of Arthur Schlesinger Jr., like "money-grubbing materialists."

And this so often happens with music / art / fashion. Creative people set trends because the territory hasn't been explored. People that have no original ideas yet lots of money then latch on and suck the cool out.
here is a section referring to the the late 60's:

"It's day-job time again in America, and that's O.K. Artists have always had them — van Gogh the preacher, Pollock the busboy, Henry Darger the janitor — and will again. The trick is to try to make them an energy source, not a chore."

Ummm and just to let you know Holland, Henry Darger from my readings and interest finds on him, was never known for art until death. He pretty much hid his work and never sold work.

I'm sure it's hard for you to understand based upon your article. You obviously have never been around someone who simply makes for the sake of making art. Being a writer you would think you have some interest in creativity. Based upon your fear of the industry and economy perhaps it is you that should be looking for a "real life" job. You are one of those "directly or indirectly, on the industry payroll" being that you got paid to write this article.

It's fear that restricts people and suppresses them. Perhaps the times are good for artists that simply make art for the sake of doing so. This way money isn't a consideration and creativity isn't compromised.

My friend, Artist Jim Morton had this to say:

Perhaps this is the bottom line of both of these essays which is that when the money and business finally are driven away from the art world by the recession (depression?) then we will have only the artists who do it for the real and right reasons and those looking for money will go away along with their ancillary staff. I am thinking that this would be a good and cleansing thing (but first give me some money so I can be smug about how good this is for our collective souls). I am wondering about this attempt by conservatives to destroy any money for the arts in the stimulus package reasoning that the arts are for liberal eastern cappucino drinkers and not for real people. The counter argument is that the arts employ many stage hands and ticket clerks and is a real industry with jobs that feed people. I am not easy with the model of the arts as an industry that provides jobs. Are you?

I think you're right Jim. It may be a good thing. Although jobs are good. I think anything in excess can be dangerous. And people who are greedy and selfish exist in all fields unfortunately. I guess over all I don't like the generalizing from the articles but being in the midwest and not rolling in the money, I have not seen this extreme. I suppose the entertainment industry could be the most guilty for being the most greedy. However it is the government who wishes to dumb down america but putting such an emphasis on hollywood and the entertainment industry. and again, it's andy warhol who's obsession with hollywood and entertainment who may have linked the two to be at this appalling state.

you know what really pisses me off? greedy people who need to find something else to do with their time. do me a favor, if you take a photo or make a piece of art or rearrange your yard or your face and someone is inspired enough to use it as a reference or guide to build upon a new idea, be thankful. don't be an asshole. ownership is bullshit. this makes me so angry! i'm pretty sure that shepard fairy also made little to no money on these posters. even though he is paid, he's also a street artist! i'm sure many people can't even begin to understand why someone would make "work" and not get paid. which is why people think art is just weird. haters.

Massimo Audiello Gallery in New York is currently presenting Alison Brady's second solo show, An Uncertain Nature, until February 28th. Brady received an M.F.A. in Photography, Video, and Related Media from The School of the Visual Arts in New York City. She works in series of color photographs that investigate subconscious desires and trigger emotional and sexual responses.

Brady creates compelling scenarios in domestic interiors by inserting some mysterious or troubling elements. Her subjects, both strangers and friends, often have their identities obscured by bizarre set pieces, creating images that are at once alluring and repellant. The artist states that she attempts "to create dichotomies between the sensual and the horrific, the beautiful and the destructive." She has previously been featured on DailyServing for her exhibition at the Foundation Center of Photography in Poland last summer.

Andrew Marr in the control room. And a couple of turbines tripped in point 8 at around 4:00 this morning. Should be OK in a couple of hours. Croissants in the mean time.

9th September

For some reason we're going to try and start full-on commissioning of the LHC with beam under the gaze of the world's press tomorrow. The car park has been fenced off, there's huge TV lorry outside and banners all over the control room. Due to a transformer fault the cryogenics tripped last night and we won't get sectors 78 and 81 back to later this evening. Should be interesting.

Louise Bourgeois wow is 97! and still exhibiting! The Louise Bourgeois retrospective at the Guggenheim Museum is going on right now. The first two are featured in the new york times slide show. Not sure about the others. They are just some of my favorites. Got to see an installation of hers at the Moma in March. I love how powerfully blunt with emotion her work is. she doesn't hold back no matter what her age. (not really into the spiders though)

I found Poison and Joy by John Tarrant, Roshi from a quote on whiskey river. The following is some text I pulled from the text...

From a personal point of view, there is a way in which when we get immersed in darkness and life just overwhelms us and overtakes us, we either go under or we become wise. If you have a solid meditation practice, you will become wise and you can trust that. So you can trust yourself in the most extremely difficult situations. And I know zen students often choose to work in difficult kinds of work. And so again, I want to reiterate, you can trust the practice to hold you through the greatest difficulty, and it will.

The I Ching puts it in a more descriptive way. It says, essentially, the same thing. That what is happening to us in the darkness is that our character is transforming. We are building the great foundation which the joy can inhabit. And without that foundation there is nothing to hold the joy when it comes. And you must know this. Almost everybody who has come to zen has had some experiences of eternity being present. When you are a child, children have these experiences. And suddenly everything is alive and interconnected and you see the compassion in a leaf, in a hillside, in the ants crawling up the vine stem. And we lose it because there is nothing to hold it. When we go into the darkness, one thing that poison in our lives does for us is it makes our foundation so that the joy can be held.

The I Ching has a wonderful hexagram called jen (sp??) or obstruction which is No. 39. It says, as it often does, "perseverance brings good fortune." Well, there are some situations in which perseverance doesn't, and you just need to stop everything. You broke your leg and walking on it really won't help. You need to stop. So when we're obstructed, when we're in darkness and difficulty, perseverance does help. The image is, "Water on the mountain. The image of obstruction. Thus the superior person turns her attention to herself and molds her character." So that when you are blocked in the outer world, you need "an unswerving inner purpose to bring good fortune in the end," it says. "An obstruction that lasts for a time is useful for self-development. This is the value of adversity. Difficulties and obstructions throw a person back on herself. While inferior people seek to put the blame on others, bewailing their fate; the superior people seek the error within themselves and through this introspection the external obstacle becomes an occasion for inner enrichment and education."

Kuan Yin (Quan Yin)--goddess of compassion, nurturing mother

To the humble she is goddess, mother figure, friend, guide, and protector; to the philosophical she represents the divine force of compassion that not only pervades the cosmos, holding all together in harmonious accord, but also manifests in this world in various forms sometimes through the spiritual nature of one or a series of great men and women. Devotees claim they often feel her nearness, or see her in person. Whether this presence is physical or a subtle thought form perceived by mystic vision, who can say?

So that when you are sleepy, kill yourself with sleepiness. When you are in despair, that despair, too, is something that has appeared. It, too, has Buddha nature. When your knees hurt, kill yourself with pain in the knees.

So when we stop avoiding and holding back from life, then we will find the joy will open. And there is a way in which it opens. I think it only opens when we have been willing to suffer some.

A monk asked Yang-ch'i, "As it is said, if you want to escape from the clamor in the mind, you should read the ancient teaching. What is the ancient teaching?"
Yang-ch'i said, "The moon is bright in space; the waves are calm on the ocean."

She is bold and feminine. And involved in some great ideas like free words. also did the free biennial.
and this bike project: "Toyshop is a street art collective that confronts urban alienation and private ownership with a takeover of public space and events and perfomances aimed at redrawing our physical and psychological landscapes. Our gallery is on the streets, and we want to share that with you, pointing out famous and hidden spots throughout the city." (back in o3)

Robert Rauschenberg, the American painter, sculptor, printmaker, photographer and performance artist who was one of the most influential artists in the second half of the 20th Century, died Monday night at his home in Captiva Island, Fla., according to news reports. He was 82.
The cause was heart failure, said Arne Glimcher, chairman of PaceWildenstein, the gallery in Manhattan that represented the artist.
A prolific worker in many media that he combined according to rules all his own, Rauschenberg was as much a catalyst for others as a creator who sought to operate in a kind of aesthetic no-man's land, which he famously called "the gap between art and life."
Robert Rauschenberg, the irrepressibly prolific American artist who time and again reshaped art in the 20th century.
Rauschenberg defied the traditional idea that an artist stick to one medium or style. He pushed, prodded and sometimes reconceived all the mediums in which he worked.
The remark reflected the optimism and generosity of spirit that Mr. Rauschenberg became known for. His work was likened to a Saint Bernard: uninhibited and mostly good-natured. He could be the same way in person. When he became rich, he gave millions of dollars to charities for women, children, medical research, other artists and Democratic politicians.
Like his friends and collaborators composer John Cage and choreographer Merce Cunningham, Rauschenberg brought together chance procedures, everyday experiences and found materials to create pieces that testified to new possibilities in art. Such openness, along with his habitual blurring of the boundaries between media, gave a model for generations of younger artists.
"His ferocious, almost omnivorous creativity as a young artist in the [late] '40s, '50s and even into the '60s was so liberating for his generation and the generation that followed," said James Cuno, director of the Art Institute of Chicago.
"He brought a freedom and openness not burdened by the weight of the immediate past. Everything he touched in the '40s and '50s seemed to be new and challenging, and it was not about him but the potential of art making.
In 1985, Rauschenberg traveled internationally to promote world peace and understanding through the vehicle of art. Calling his project the Rauschenberg Overseas Culture Interchange (ROCI), he visited and exhibited in Mexico, Chile, Venezuela, China, Tibet, Japan, Cuba, the Soviet Union, Berlin, and Malaysia. The culminating exhibition took place at the National Gallery of Art, Washington in 1991 as part of the Gallery’s 50th anniversary celebration.
The combination of art and science is something that Rauschenberg continued to investigate throughout the 1960s in what he calls his ‘blowing fuses period’.
"I like any kind of collaborative thing," Rauschenberg said in 1982. "In fact, even my personal work usually involves the handling or mishandling of someone else. I guess it's a sort of device to try to retard stylism, which to me is deadly....I think that two people in an exchange of information or techniques have a lot more. It's almost the equivalent of six sets of energies, not just two.”

In 1969 Rauschenberg was invited by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to witness one of the most significant social events of the decade - the launch of Apollo 11, the shuttle that would place man on the moon. NASA provided Rauschenberg with detailed scientific maps, charts and photographs of the launch, which formed the basis of the Stoned moon series - comprising thirty-three lithographs printed at Gemini GEL. The Stoned moon series is a celebration of man’s peaceful exploration of space as a ‘responsive, responsible collaboration between man and technology’.
Rauschenberg was born on Oct. 22, 1925 in Port Arthur, TX. He studied for a year at the Kansas City Art Institute and School of Design, before a disappointing six-month stay in Paris at the Academie Julian. After reading about the work of artist Josef Albers, Rauschenberg returned to the United States to study with him at Black Mountain College.

Many credit Rauschenberg with bridging the gap between abstract expressionism and pop art. Today his work is included in virtually every important international collection of contemporary art.

Tongsue Ly

To Whom Do You Beautifully Belong? is a year-long exhibition of the transformation of an underutilized parcel of land located in a concentrated urban environment in Columbus, Ohio. Leased for $1 from the city by the artist Tongsue Ly, the project operates under the guiding principle of experimentation with open access to urban space for strengthening community, gardening organically, learning about plants, collaborating with neighbors, and discussing the volatile intersection of cities and ecology.

Influenced by the rich histories of community-based art, land art, process art, and public art, the initiative addresses issues of sovereignty and the social sphere-—to whom does this land belong, who can use it, who is responsible for it and why is it available for $1?
